How to Ace the College Interview

..Ask your guidance counselor for examples of some common interview question, then practice them with someone – a friend, a parent, a teacher – so you can get an idea of what you might say....

The college interview is often an important part of the admissions process, one that many students stress over. While every interview is different, they do have many things in common, and following certain steps can help you ace it.

Take the interview as seriously as you would an important job interview

Ask your guidance counselor for examples of some common interview question, then practice them with someone – a friend, a parent, a teacher – so you can get an idea of what you might say. Dress up for the big day in business or business-casual attire, and avoid showing up late.

Come prepared

Bring a copy of your resume with you. If you don't already have one, prepare one that includes any jobs you've held, extra-curricula activities you did, your volunteer work, awards you've won, and anything else that makes you seem worthy of admission. It can also help guide the interview – your interviewer will probably use it as a spring-board for asking you questions.

Bring questions and take notes

The interview is as much an opportunity for you to get to know the school on a more personal level as it is for them to get to know you. At the end you will be asked if you have any more questions – if you don't it will seem like you lack real interest in the college. Your interviewer will either be an alum or a current employee, so take advantage! Ask questions whose answers can't easily be found on the admissions website. But make sure to curb your enthusiasm – excessively fawning over the university can seem insincere. Don't forget to write down the answers you're given; later, this list might become an important tool for choosing between schools.

Be yourself

Unless you are an accomplished actor, an interviewer will probably be able to tell if you're projecting a false image of yourself. If you figure out what your best traits are and how to highlight them, you can use that knowledge to give you the confidence to shine. Your enthusiasm for the school will likely show through, and you'll be one step closer to your undergraduate education.

How To Pass The Massage Therapy Licensing Exams

....Study the basic subjects such as anatomy, ethics, pathologies and massage techniques, but also make sure to study pharmacology and Chinese theory. There will be numerous questions regarding chakras, the five elements, and meridians on the exam. ..

This is an important test. This test justifies the thousands of dollars spent on massage school, the hours working in the school clinic for free and countless hours determining if a mole looks cancerous. Even thinking about this test raises your blood pressure. Here are some tips to help helping you pass your exam while remaining calm.

Firstly, get yourself a good study guide. It doesn't matter if you borrow it from the library, buy a copy or download one. Make sure your book has test questions and an answer key to test your knowledge. Study these questions on your work breaks, lunch, and anytime you have a free moment. As a LMT who has taken the exam, worked as a massage school instructor, and tutors students on passing, I have written a study guide titled "Don't Panic! Questions & Answers To Help You Pass The Massage Therapy National Exam" available on Amazon.com and http://www.gtorres.weebly.com

Make yourself flash cards. (Another advantage to making your own is studies show writing down information will help you memorize it.) You can buy ready-made flash cards, but they will cost you anywhere from $60-$200. Flash cards are a great tool to use by yourself or with a study group.

Study the basic subjects such as anatomy, ethics, pathologies and massage techniques, but also make sure to study pharmacology and Chinese theory. There will be numerous questions regarding chakras, the five elements, and meridians on the exam. Also make sure you brush up on medical terms. Knowing prefixes, suffixes, and root words will help you decipher words you don't know and enable you to make an estimated guess.

Stay calm. The more you stress yourself, the more information you will forget. Try to avoid calming your nerves with alcohol. As nervous as you are, you will most likely down enough rum & soda to give yourself an unpleasant hangover for the test. Get a full night sleep the night before and make sure to eat breakfast the day of.

When is just getting an education more practical than a specialized degree?

...The problem is that specialized education doesn't work as well as it did in the 70's when they were in school. The recent figures are showing that most young people by the time they reach 39 will have had at least three different jobs and made one major career change. So much for the specialized career!...

I grew up in a world where young people were urged to stay in school and get an education. It didn't matter what in, just get an education. At that time about 10% of high school students went on to get a college degree, less in non-urban areas.

That all changed in the 60's and 70's at a time when university enrolment was skyrocketing. The big shift was in terms of specialization. Students were urged to decide on a career and work towards getting the necessary training and credentials needed to pursue that career.

The pressure on young people to "be practical" and decide on a career early still exists today. If a 19-year-old announces, "I want to be a lawyer (or nurse, or teacher, or electrician)", he or she is met with approving smiles from teachers and parents. If the same 19-year-old were to say simply "I just want to get an education", his or her seniors would stare with puzzled expressions or make pronouncements about being practical.

The problem is that specialized education doesn't work as well as it did in the 70's when they were in school. The recent figures are showing that most young people by the time they reach 39 will have had at least three different jobs and made one major career change. So much for the specialized career!

The dream of the single career doesn't fit with the changing economies in the Western world. In his book, A Whole New Mind, Daniel Pink estimated a few years ago that 60% of North American jobs as we have known them will move offshore. Anything that can be routinized will go offshore. It's already easy to find an English-speaking MBA for $9/hr or a programmer for $5/hr.

So what if a young person were to go to college simply to get an education and a degree, the degree being the basic entrance credential for most non-routine jobs? He or she could study fine arts, history, sociology, literature, or whatever else was of interest. And what if they waited on a career decision well beyond graduation?

The Harvard MBA was the gold standard degree in the business world for several decades. They still only accept one applicant in 100. But the Stanford MFA (Master of Fine Arts), according to Daniel Pink, is the new gold standard. They accept one applicant in 1000. In the modern economy, our edge over the emerging economies comes from creativity, design, and perspective. Design it here, but build it there. Where was the windshield for your new car made? Probably China.

The young people best equipped to contribute to the modern economy will be broadly educated. This applies even in the professions. As far back as 35 years ago, McMaster University medical school preferred sociology or history graduates over science graduates. They wanted applicants with "humanity" and "ability to think"; stating, "We can teach them the science."

Once again the broad general education has risen to the top in long-term practicality. Some of our youth already get this. We collectively need to lighten up. They need inspiration more than pressure.

Becoming a Clinical Psychologist

...Just as there are many types of problems clinical psychologists deal with, there are a number of different approaches to practicing psychology and administering treatment. Because only a psychiatrist can prescribe medication, a clinical psychologist may work with a team of other health care providers to give a patient complete care....

Clinical psychologists meet with patients who have any number of problems, from developmental disabilities and injuries, to trouble coping with a death or divorce. After making a diagnosis, a clinical psychologist will then recommend a course of treatment which may include medication, therapy, or both.

Practice
Just as there are many types of problems clinical psychologists deal with, there are a number of different approaches to practicing psychology and administering treatment. Because only a psychiatrist can prescribe medication, a clinical psychologist may work with a team of other health care providers to give a patient complete care.
Depending on a clinical psychologist's field of study, interests, and personal beliefs about the most effective means to treat disorders, therapy can take any number of paths. Some counsel on the individual level, while others work with families or groups. Many focus on behavior modification, while others focus on addiction and the recovery process. Still other clinical psychologists work in hospital settings to help patients cope with pain or neurological injuries. Some clinical psychologists do research through universities and work with large numbers of test subjects.

Education
While there are job opportunities for people who have associate and bachelor's degrees in psychology, working with patients in a clinical setting requires a master's degree or a doctorate. Many clinical psychology programs choose to specialize in their studies so they may enter a specific field upon graduation.

Specializations
To address the growing elderly population, the relatively new field of geropsychology has emerged to deal with the unique mental health problems of the elderly.
Health psychology is another branch of clinical psychology, and it deals mainly with how various factors come together to determine overall health. They generally take a more community-oriented approach to psychology and study things like the correlation of homelessness and schizophrenia and may work toward creating outreach programs to help at-risk populations.

Neuropsychologists are interested in the hard-wiring of the brain and how it makes us behave. They may work with patients to help them cope with neurological effects of things like stroke, cancer, or head trauma, or they may conduct research on the physical workings of different parts of the brain.

Salary and Job Prospects
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, job outlook for psychologists is higher than average through 2016, with a projected 15% growth rate. The most successful job applicants in this field will have doctorate degrees and doctoral specializations.

Many clinical psychologists end up opening their own practices after working in schools, hospitals, or group practices. A whopping 34%of all psychologists are self-employed. Don't let this scare you, though. In 2008, the average annual salary for a clinical psychologist was of $70,190.

Many schools offer programs in psychology, and it's even possible to earn your master's or doctorate in psychology through an online college.
